This was a question proposed in my studio class today. When deciding on how to construct our class site model, some students were more concerned about making a "cool" model more so than a precise one. I am all for making a model look pristine and interesting but in my opinion, a studio site model needs to be precise and done in a timely matter regardless of the "cool" factor.
On a personal note, I do think that final models should relate to your concept. The question of accurate verse abstract would depend on what you are trying to show. Models for the most part are design tools. They help us visualize space and volume, solid and void, material and texture, and more.
